Living Room for English Manor Residence
The living room of this English Manor residence has an aura of grandness, with its dramatic scale and classic, traditional architectural details, consistent with historic English Manor houses. The design concept was to create a space that would fuse traditional elements with a fresh, modern aesthetic for a light, airy, welcoming ambiance.
A deeply coffered ceiling creates structure to the space, and accentuates the perfect symmetry that is achieved with an exquisite, hand-carved limestone fireplace as the centerpiece of the composition.
The ceiling and wall panels which overmount the fireplace, and reach up to the two-story ceiling, and flow down, on either side of the mantelpiece to the ground, are glazed in a soft Gustavian white to blend with the creamy patina of the limestone. This visually enlarges the scale and drama of the fireplace, and creates a fluid, cohesive movement through the space.

The limestone fireplace mantelpiece is carved in a traditional style, with gently curving fluted columns and graceful, sweeping acanthus leafs with an artfully restrained touch. An exquisite modern painting by Albert Newbill hangs above the fireplace and sets the stage for the juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary furnishings.
Custom-made leather club chairs and a sleek, lineal coffee table and sofa table harmonize together with the classic lines of a Schumacher velvet sofa and mohair wingchairs. A silk ikat rug plays off the moody blue of the painting. The room is flooded with natural light, with three pairs of French doors leading to an outdoor veranda.
